And after a few hours of driving, we came to Willits, California--The Gateway to the Redwoods. This is Justin's new favorite town. I'm sensing a theme here. Every time we come to a new town, Justin finds his new retirement place. I'm getting the feeling he doesn't want to live in Arizona anymore.
Just outside of Willits, we found the Drive Thru Tree Park. The kids really liked this one. Our Honda Pilot was too big to drive through, but we stood inside of it and watched others drive through.
The actual name of the tree is The Chandelier Tree, and it was our first real experience with a giant redwood. The kids were pretty excited to see it. We couldn't believe how big these trees were!
All three kids could almost get their arms around about half of this tree, and little did we know there were bigger ones in store. This one seemed so huge!It was so hard to capture the beauty and magnificence of these giants in pictures. We're hoping the kids remember this for a long time to come. We spend about 45 minutes in the park, stretching our legs and grabbing a snack. Then we loaded back up and headed out to the Avenue of Giants.
