We got there and paid for our tickets. We were pretty overwhelmed by how enormous the ship was. We picked up headsets inside, and were given a complete audio tour of the ship.
Tatum was adamant that she did not want to do this tour, but after a few minutes, she was completely into it. We saw everything from the mess hall to the officers' quarters.
The kids learned a few working knots, and learned about the different roles the sailors on the ship played. We learned that there were sailors who worked in the kitchens, laundry rooms, and post office, as well as the flight officers who flew and directed the planes.
The kids got to see the engine rooms and the brig. It was interesting to hear the sailors tell their stories on the audio tour. I didn't realize that the brig was like a jail for sailors that didn't follow Navy rules.
We had a great time, and before we knew it, we'd been on the Midway for 3 hours. We were starving, but we really didn't want to leave the museum. We ran to the gift shop, grabbed some chocolate bars and pretzels, and had a quick snack on one of the observation decks.
Then we finished up our tour. All in all, we were there for 5 hours, and we still didn't see everything. We were all starving, though, so we wrapped up our tour.
Once we finished our tour, we grabbed our packed lunches from the car and headed to the park next to the Midway. The weather was beautiful, and we had a little picnic next to the water.
To finish out our long day, we walked over to Seaport Village and did some shopping. The kids love salt water taffy, so we picked several different kinds and had a treat break. Everyone was pretty exhausted, and ready to head home after our long adventure. We are all turning in early.
Tomorrow we head to Knott's Berry Farm. We can hardly wait!
